iSpy: Something that Is Fabulous…

In grateful, painting with light on October 24, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Looking for something fab-u-lous?

This afternoon, I discovered another of DC’s hidden gems: Hillwood Museum and Gardens. The museum is gilded to the hilt but the gardens…

…absolutely stunning.

Enjoy some of the sites I spied in the place “where fabulous lives.”

Orchids are simply magical...

Gorgeousness greets us at the entrance.

A daliah on the verge...

Amen, sista!

You Never Close Your Eyes…

In grateful, monthly recap, painting with light on June 30, 2010 at 6:26 pm

…anymore when I kiss your lips…”

[Where’d we go wrong? Is there…is there…someone else?]

I know. I know. It has been forever since we chatted. [And I’m doing fine, thanks for asking!]

But I’d be remiss if I let June pass without a nod to the up-and-down whirlwind it brought.

So, June, here’s looking at you, baby:

1. Spent the afternoon catching up with my sister and her family. Loved, loved, loved seeing them!

2. Sat on the deck and experienced the wonder of being surrounded by fireflies.

3. Waved at onlookers, as the bus I was riding drove through the middle of the Puerto Rican parade in NYC.

4. Laughed, giggled and guffawed with some dear friends, while on a wild excursion to the Big Apple.

5. Listened to the very cool stylings of Christylez Bacon.

6. Splurged and saw a real movie in a real movie theater!

7. Took the back roads and wandered my way up to the Baltimore harbor.

8. Was reminded that, yes, hydrangeas really are one of the most magical plants. I. Want. Blue. Flowers.

9. Said goodbye to my highfalutin career as a barista. [You said you wanted a half-caff, non-fat, no-foam, 190-degree, sugar-free-vanilla latte?]

10. Oh, yeah–breathed a sigh of relief as I started a new job! Whoosh!

So very blessed. Blessed, indeed.

All Aboard?

In grateful, musings on June 12, 2010 at 5:13 am

Haze hanging, illuminated by the rising sun. Green fields blur past. Speckles of suburbia appear and are replaced with whirring water. The departing whistle sounds.

(“All a-boar-d,” I whisper to myself.)

With two days of my unemployed freedom remaining, I’m on a train– headed to NYC for a last-minute vacation.

Won’t you share the trip with me?

And, Lo, the Clouds Parted

In grateful, musings on June 3, 2010 at 4:28 pm

[hallelujah,hallelujah…haaaa-laaaa…aay-looooo-yaaahhh]

Nah…that wasn’t a chorus of angels, it was just me…being all giddy and such.

Why?

Well, if you’ve been following the saga-of-the-unemployed lady, you might have guessed from that stellar opening that the hunt is…[drum roll, please]…over.

Whoosh…

A big ol’ thanks to all of the crossed fingers, toes, eyes and legs! Your contortionist movements paid off, my friends…thanks!

[Sigh. A big sigh, indeed.]

Whoo…

…just got a little light-headed over that realization. Think I’ll just sit and let that soak in for a minute.

Coffee, Anyone?

In grateful, painting with light on May 21, 2010 at 4:27 pm

It happens every Sunday afternoon at 2.

Yep, if you get a chance, head on down to Sidamo Coffee & Tea and experience the most charming Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, where a lovely woman 1) roasts coffee beans over an open flame, 2) brews a pot of dark, chocolaty coffee, 3) then pours the velvety liquid into a morsel of a cup and serves it to excited onlookers like me.

And to make the experience even more cool, the gracious store owner invited me to roast some beans, too.

A truly amazingly, cool experience!

Check out some of the pics from the day:

isn't she gorgeous?

heating water in a gorgeous clay pot

rich, smooth and dark...mmm...quite a pick-me-up

pale green, turning to a mustardy-ochre then settling into a robust brown--loved watching the colors change

Big Sigh…

Jiggity-Jig

In grateful on May 4, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Yes, my dear friends, I’m home again, home again, and, although I’m a little tired, here’s a little jiggity-jig!

Today, I’m grateful for:

1. Hearing “It’smymom…it’smymom…it’smymom” coming from the stubby tail of the white schnauzer, who popped his head out of the truck’s window and welcomed me home.

2. Dramamine: a necessity for me on any flight but especially appreciated on today’s rumbly-bumbly flight.

3. The “pile o’ cats” on the window sill–the two of them just bathing in the afternoon sun.

4. Not having to make dinner, thanks to Five Guys. (Yummo!)

5. Chillin’ on the sofa and relaxing for a bit with my cute family.

Wonder of Words

Got a sweet email from a once-loved lover, who shared with me the power of a poet–the magic of words…check it out.

5 Things

In grateful on April 26, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Well, the week’s off to a great start, and today I am very grateful for:

1. Catching up with some cute friends who stopped by today.

2. The freshness that a spring rain brings.

3. The ability to admit that the dinner I made tonight kinda…sucked!

4. A spicy bite of mango.

5. Turning in my students’ final grades. Whoosh!

Too Great for Just Five

In grateful on April 18, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Today’s gratitude list is just brimming with joy–I couldn’t dare limit it to just five!

1. Watching a hawk tilt on a breath of wind.

2. Peering at the piers on Peach Blossom Creek.

3. Discovering my favorite (so far!) Maryland town: Oxford–a charming, white-picketed town on one of the Chesapeake peninsulas.

4. Martin birdhouses peppering people’s yards.

5. Watching a Granddad pitch a ball to a bat-swinging girl.

6. Seeing a wind-blushed girl pick dandelions.

7. Spotting a wild turkey (I think!) striking a pose.

8. Crossing the magestic Chesapeake Bay Bridge with a soaring seagull at my side.

9. Enjoying the gentle peace of spending the day with another introvert.

10. Feeling…content.

Nice day. Nice day, indeed.
