iSpy: Something that Is Fabulous…

In grateful, painting with light on October 24, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Looking for something fab-u-lous?

This afternoon, I discovered another of DC’s hidden gems: Hillwood Museum and Gardens. The museum is gilded to the hilt but the gardens…

…absolutely stunning.

Enjoy some of the sites I spied in the place “where fabulous lives.”

Orchids are simply magical...

Gorgeousness greets us at the entrance.

A daliah on the verge...

Amen, sista!

You Never Close Your Eyes…

In grateful, monthly recap, painting with light on June 30, 2010 at 6:26 pm

…anymore when I kiss your lips…”

[Where’d we go wrong? Is there…is there…someone else?]

I know. I know. It has been forever since we chatted. [And I’m doing fine, thanks for asking!]

But I’d be remiss if I let June pass without a nod to the up-and-down whirlwind it brought.

So, June, here’s looking at you, baby:

1. Spent the afternoon catching up with my sister and her family. Loved, loved, loved seeing them!

2. Sat on the deck and experienced the wonder of being surrounded by fireflies.

3. Waved at onlookers, as the bus I was riding drove through the middle of the Puerto Rican parade in NYC.

4. Laughed, giggled and guffawed with some dear friends, while on a wild excursion to the Big Apple.

5. Listened to the very cool stylings of Christylez Bacon.

6. Splurged and saw a real movie in a real movie theater!

7. Took the back roads and wandered my way up to the Baltimore harbor.

8. Was reminded that, yes, hydrangeas really are one of the most magical plants. I. Want. Blue. Flowers.

9. Said goodbye to my highfalutin career as a barista. [You said you wanted a half-caff, non-fat, no-foam, 190-degree, sugar-free-vanilla latte?]

10. Oh, yeah–breathed a sigh of relief as I started a new job! Whoosh!

So very blessed. Blessed, indeed.

May: Take Two

In monthly recap, painting with light on May 31, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Can you believe that summer’s now in full swing?

Neither can I! Where’d this year go, anyway?

With a freshly grilled burger and a tangy margarita in my belly, it’s time to say farewell to May, but before it goes, a quick nod to this month’s highlights:

1. Spied a waddling mama and papa walking their three goslings down the street.

2. Was enchanted by the art-deco architecture at Glen Echo Park.

3. Gave loves to an ailing daschund…get well soon, cute Jenny!

4. Felt like me as I taught two seminars. (God, that felt good!)

5. Watched a play come together during an open rehearsal at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in downtown DC.

6. Fell in love with dogwoods–and their celadon blooms.

7. Had my first job interview in…what…13 years!

8. Treated myself to a small cup of pistachio ice cream.

9. Breathed deeply as I walked through the rose-filled courtyard at the Franciscan Monastery.

10. Watched a pair of geese slide, skid, and skip along a pond’s surface…what a landing!

Pieces of DC

Furthering my quest to seek out cool spots in DC, I recently stumbled upon the amazing mosaics at the Franciscan Monastery–simply gorgeous!

Coffee, Anyone?

In grateful, painting with light on May 21, 2010 at 4:27 pm

It happens every Sunday afternoon at 2.

Yep, if you get a chance, head on down to Sidamo Coffee & Tea and experience the most charming Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, where a lovely woman 1) roasts coffee beans over an open flame, 2) brews a pot of dark, chocolaty coffee, 3) then pours the velvety liquid into a morsel of a cup and serves it to excited onlookers like me.

And to make the experience even more cool, the gracious store owner invited me to roast some beans, too.

A truly amazingly, cool experience!

Check out some of the pics from the day:

isn't she gorgeous?

roasting beans over an open flame

heating water in a gorgeous clay pot

rich, smooth and dark...mmm...quite a pick-me-up

pale green, turning to a mustardy-ochre then settling into a robust brown--loved watching the colors change

a few "befores" next to my "afters"

Big Sigh…

Taking Time to…

In painting with light on May 19, 2010 at 4:40 pm

…smell the roses.

Stumbling upon Brookside Gardens meant walking into the heady scents rising from the rose garden.

A truly gorgeous way to start a Sunday. So glad I took the time…
