April, Take Two

In monthly recap on April 30, 2010 at 11:44 am

How’d that happen?

One day, you wake up and it’s April Fool’s and the next thing you know the month is over! Now that’s some kind of crazy joke!

Before April passes, just a quick nod to some of this month’s highlights:

1. Letting go of so much of the old and feeling content with the new…emptiness.

digging the drag queens

2. Feeling a twinge of shoe-envy as I watched drag queens strut their stuff. (Oh, yes, and I did feel a little leg-envy when I watched one particular queen dance–man, she had a set of legs!).

3. Enjoying feeling pampered, sassy and refreshed with a brand-new ‘do from a “real” hairstylist!

4. Finally getting a Maryland driver license. Of course, that happened after getting a good finger-wagging and court summons from the cop who pulled me over!

5. Letting my mind curl around this Buddy Wakefield quote: “Forgiveness is the release of all hope for a better past.”

6. Sitting in a dark theater and watching a story unfold through words and song. Gotta love live theater!

7. Seeing shocking mounds of white and brilliant piles of fuchsia as the azaleas peak.

pretty raised beds filled with yummy greens

8. Noticing a little family of goslings enjoying the sun.

9. Stumbling upon the “people’s garden” at the USDA downtown.

10. Being welcomed home by a brilliant, red cardinal the other day.

Wonder of Words

In choose your destiny, grateful, musings on April 29, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Got a sweet email from a once-loved lover, who shared with me the power of a poet–the magic of words…check it out.

5 Things

In grateful on April 26, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Well, the week’s off to a great start, and today I am very grateful for:

1. Catching up with some cute friends who stopped by today.

2. The freshness that a spring rain brings.

3. The ability to admit that the dinner I made tonight kinda…sucked!

4. A spicy bite of mango.

5. Turning in my students’ final grades. Whoosh!

Maybe Kermit Was Wrong

In musings on April 25, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Spent the day attending the Earth Day Climate Rally down at the National Mall today.
Aside from doing some serious people-watching (which I love doing), and listening to some cool bands, I also heard some cool speakers talking about how we can be greener.
My favorite take-away? It came from the guy who spoke for American Forests. He said,
“How do you spell ‘relief’? R-E-L-E-A-F.”
Yep, “plant a tree, cool the planet.”

And so, dear Kermit, perhaps it is easy being green.

Too Great for Just Five

In grateful on April 18, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Today’s gratitude list is just brimming with joy–I couldn’t dare limit it to just five!

1. Watching a hawk tilt on a breath of wind.

2. Peering at the piers on Peach Blossom Creek.

3. Discovering my favorite (so far!) Maryland town: Oxford–a charming, white-picketed town on one of the Chesapeake peninsulas.

4. Martin birdhouses peppering people’s yards.

5. Watching a Granddad pitch a ball to a bat-swinging girl.

6. Seeing a wind-blushed girl pick dandelions.

7. Spotting a wild turkey (I think!) striking a pose.

8. Crossing the magestic Chesapeake Bay Bridge with a soaring seagull at my side.

9. Enjoying the gentle peace of spending the day with another introvert.

10. Feeling…content.

Nice day. Nice day, indeed.

The ‘hood

In musings on April 17, 2010 at 6:53 pm

Yep, it’s cool–it’s freaking cool being this close to the White House!

When I read that the White House had garden tours this weekend, I set the alarm for 5am, then headed down to check out the ‘hood.

Along with seeing the Obama’s sweet pup, I also spied the Rose Garden and even Michelle’s Kitchen Garden.

Check out some of my pics…

wonderfully symmetrical

bok choy, cauliflower, chervil...all sorts of good eats growing here

5 Things

In grateful on April 14, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Today, I am so very grateful for:

1. A really great night’s sleep. (It doesn’t happen all too often so it was a real blessing!)

2. Deciding to cook dinner tonight. (Much better than cereal, don’t you think?)

3. Having a sweet cat curled up next to me.

4. How the day warmed up after a chilly start.

5. Finishing grading for the day. Whoosh!

Gorgeous-ness

In grateful, painting with light on April 13, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Had a really great experience this afternoon, and am celebrating that growth with a bit of gorgeous-ness I found this weekend.

Hope you’re enjoying the unexpected joys that this growing season is bringing.
